CHEMICAL PEELS
Chemical peels work by removing the outer layer of the skin to reveal the smooth and healthy skin beneath. They can reduce the appearance of facial blemishes, wrinkles, and uneven skin pigmentation. Chemical peels may be performed in conjunction with a facelift, but they are not a substitute for surgery, and will not prevent or slow the aging process.
Initial Consultation for a Chemical Peel Treatment
During your initial consultation with Dr. Naidu, she will discuss with you your desires and expectations from a chemical peel. This will also involve a complete medical history and an examination of the skin, soft tissue and muscles of the face and neck. Dr. Naidu will suggest a procedure that suits you best and answer any questions that you might have. In some cases, a pre-treatment regimen of Retin-A (treretinoin) and/or hydroquinone will be prescribed.
Chemical Peel Treatment
Chemical peels use a chemical solution which improve and smooth the texture of the facial skin by removing the damaged outer layers. Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) peels are offered by Dr. Naidu. Alpha-hydroxy acids, such as glycolic, lactic, or fruit acids are mild peels which are best for fine wrinkling, dryness, and uneven skin pigmentation. These peels may be performed weekly or at longer intervals for the best result. Tricholoroacetic acids are medium-depth peels which are also used for fine wrinkles, superficial blemishes, and pigment problems. These peels are preferred for patients with darker skin. More than one peel may be needed to achieve the desired result. Both procedures are done in the office and take 20-30 minutes to perform. Anesthesia is not used as most patients describe only a temporary stinging sensation as the peel is applied.
Post Chemical Peel Treatment
After an AHA peel, no ointment or covering is required. You may note temporary stinging, redness, irritation, and crusting which will subside. With a TCA peel, you may also notice some swelling. A mild moisturizer is generally recommended to soothe the skin. Sunblock is essential after both peels. TCA patients may return to work within 1-2 weeks. AHA patients may return to work within 1-2 days.
