EAR RESHAPING (OTOPLASTY)
Otoplasty is performed to set prominent ears back closer to head or to reduce the size of large ears. While this operation is usually performed on children between the ages of six and fourteen, it is also performed on adults.

Initial Consultation for Ear Reshaping Procedure
During your initial consultation with Dr. Naidu, she will discuss with you your desires and expectations from surgery. This will include a complete medical history and an examination of the skin and cartilage of the ears. Dr. Naidu will suggest a procedure that suits you best and answer any questions that you might have.

Ear Reshaping Procedure
Several techniques can be used during otoplasty surgery, and the technique selected will depend upon the individual patient’s anatomy. An incision is made on the back of the ear to expose the cartilage. The cartilage is then sculpted and bent back towards the head, and sutures are used to hold the new shape. In some cases a piece of cartilage is removed as well. The result is a more natural shape and contour of the ear.

Otoplasty surgery takes 2 to 3 hours to perform. It is usually done under general anesthesia or sedation in the hospital or an outpatient surgery center. Most patients are able to return home that day. Young children are usually kept in the hospital for one night following surgery.

Post Ear Reshaping Surgery
Following surgery, a bulky bandage is placed around the head and ears. Three days later, the bulky dressing is removed and headband is worn around the ears at all times for three weeks, and then at night only for an additional three weeks. Most patients are able to return to work or school after one week. Children must be watched during playground activity to avoid trauma to the ears. Most sutures will not require removal. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for three weeks after surgery.
