Laser Acne Treatment FAQs

How does this new treatment work?
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is the first effective method that specifically targets the acne and the bacteria that causes it, causing the acne to clear up.  To treat the acne, photodynamic therapy (a special light based treatment) is used.   This involves placing an enzyme, Levulan, on the skin surface.  Once the Levulan is absorbed into the skin, light is applied and the bacteria that cause the acne are destroyed.

How is this different from previous acne treatments?
Active acne has traditionally been treated with an oral drug called Accutane. This method of treatment employs taking a drug that affects the entire body, as opposed to specifically treating the target problem of acne in a specific location.  There are significant side effects with Accutane.

How is the photodynamic therapy (PDT) and laser treatment for acne done?
Levulan is applied to the skin for a period of 45 to 60 minutes.  Once the Levulan is absorbed into the skin, light is applied and the bacteria that cause the acne are destroyed.  The patient becomes photosensitized and must remain out of sunlight for a period of 48 hours after the treatment.  Sun block is advised for the next week and then the patient can return to their normal activities.

Will I require more than one treatment?
The best clinical results have been seen in patients that have had 4-5 treatments spaced a month apart.  Follow-up treatments may be needed if the acne occurs again.
